As a student of psychology with a desire to pursue a career in counseling, understanding and developing personal emotional intelligence could play a significant role in the success or failure of my career. Emotional Intelligence (EQ), according to John Mayer (2009) is the ability to be aware of and manage one’s own and others emotions (para. 1). Myers (2013) identifies four components of emotional intelligence (pg. 375). The first is emotional awareness, or the ability to recognize emotions in yourself and others. Second is the ability to understand emotions. In other words, to understand how emotions affect us personally, how they affect others, and the meanings emotions convey. When I asked two friends for feedback concerning this quiz, they thought my scores were slightly low. On nine to ten questions, they raise my scores by one or two points. They also acknowledged that our perspective could bias our scores. Recognizing that we did not choose a score of 1 or 5 for any ability, a friend commented that we are inclined to view issues conservatively, being uncomfortable with â€Å"absolute† measures. We tend to view â€Å"1† as irredeemable and â€Å"5† as perfect, which we believe no human can be. Factors that contributed to higher scores on the quiz have come from experience and growth. Learning about and gaining a greater awareness of my own emotions, allows me to begin to accept and express my emotions in a positive way. Recognizing when I am becoming angry, for example, allows me to channel my response. Rather than lashing out at others without thinking, or deny my anger by trying to just stop being angry, I will stop and think through what is making me angry, then use the energy that anger provides to try to resolve the issue or take appropriate action as necessary. Learning to resolve anger this way allows me to respond to another’s anger by assisting in channeling their anger in a similar manner. The dread of socializing with other students in her third year makes her want to drop out of the university. Heather is likely suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) management. The disorder is characterized by symptoms such as the inability to freely relate with others, limited communication and repetitive forms of behavior. People suffering from this disorder tend to have a high IQ and are usually sensitive about their reputation, and they also suffer from insomnia. Heathers fear of interaction and socializing with other students, fear of embarrassing herself in front of other students, lack of participation in class and peer discussion and her lack of sleep all constitutes symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder, as per the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental illness (DSM-5). Heather performs well in her classes, but she is considering dropping out of the university due to the intense fear actively interacting with other students and being engaged in group participation. For heathers condition to be classified as a psychological disorder, the DSM-5 requires that the particular symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder must affect her social life. Heathers behavior has adverse effects especially to herself; she is unable to form social ties with her peers. She lacks critical communication skills necessary as a student due to her limited contact with others. She considers dropping out of school because she feels alone and has no one to consult. How hard it is to impress professors and build valuable connections with them. How difficult it is to make up for early GPA mistakes. Essays Every. Single. Day. Actually, with this one we can help. Being the only one in your entire dorm building that’s studying on a Friday or Saturday night. Juggling so many responsibilities at once. The class sounded so awesome, but then it turned out that the professor has this strange accent you can barely understand. Having to actually study when you study abroad. That one day you walk to class looking your absolute worst, and every sexy person on campus happens to be walking the opposite direction. When you spend hundreds of dollars on books only to then end up dropping out of the class because it wasn’t what you thought. You’re in college, and you turn 21, but you’re so broke you can’t even afford to buy a six pack. The amount of debt most graduates have to deal with after school. The current job market of the modern world is distressing, and yet there is more pressure than ever to get the same old degrees. Being caught up in other people’s college relationship and school drama to the point that it starts to get in the way of your own college experience. When you spend all Sunday cramming for a test you thought was on Monday but that day turned out to be a holiday, or the professor cancels class. When you feel like you should highlight just about every single sentence in the book. When what you thought was a big city college turns out to be the only thing in town. When you’re in a subjective class studying subjective things but the professor acts as thought their opinions are universal. Friday night and early Monday morning classes are the worst. Rejection letters that just won’t stop coming and really make no sense. Rent. Listening to people go on and on about their experiences while studying abroad, none of which can be proven.
